Sup [03 Jun 2006|05:05pm]
Oh no.

Musical labels. We have the basics: rock, pop, rap, country, r&b, punk. Mostly everything else is just a derivative of one of those. The subcategories, that’s what gets me. Pop punk, pop rock, emo, emo rock, power pop, bubblegum pop, screamo, emocore, grindcore, skater punk, ska, metal, hair metal, gangster rap, hip-hop, crunk rap, rock country, country rap, etc. I’m missing thousands of made up labels that people give this music every day.

This sparks arguments. They are so not punk. They are so not emo. They’re rock, not pop! They’re hip hop, not rap! It’s so tiring and ridiculous to have to walk on eggshells on what to call the music you listen to. It just makes me wonder, why can’t it just be music? It seems like a necessity to be able to call the music you listen to by a certain name. I’m trying to destroy that mentality.

The underlying point is, who cares? Music is individual. A band you listen to may sound very similar to another band. That doesn’t mean they both fit into the same genre to everyone. Someone may think The Used and Hawthorne Heights sound exactly the same, while another notes extensive differences and can say that they are not both metal bands, or emo bands, or whatever. So, why label your music if you’re just putting it out there to be ridiculed?

No matter what, someone out there isn’t going to like the music you listen to. There’s nothing wrong with that By classifying everything you listen to with a single word, you’re just setting yourself up for argument. If someone asks you what you like, name a few bands, don’t name a category. Break through the process of scrutinizing every note that twangs from a guitar or echoes from the piano.

It’s music. Stop making it so complicated.

oh, mercy me [05 May 2006|07:42am]
Today I woke up at 5 AM and the first thing I noticed was a package at the end of my bed from my favorite boy overseas.

Best start to the day, ever. Thank you so much, Martin. You seriously made my week. ♥ ♥

So contrary to common sense I downed an advil with about eighteen cups of coffee and now I'm bouncing off the walls. I want to go run around the block a few times but I have to be at the bus stop in ten minutes. I'm smiling.

Yesterday I heard new Brand New demos and died about eight times over.

OH I JUST REMINDED MYSELF TO DO SOMETHING.

andhearts!

Be honest, cruel, adoring, anything.

can someone please save us from punk rock 101 [20 Feb 2006|12:25pm]
I've been trying to dissect the punk scene for as long as I've known about it. First trying to fit into it, then trying to rationalize it, and now, trying to understand it. The first thing I realize is, there are so many rules. So many regulations for how to be a 'true' punk rocker. The punk labels; anarchy punk, crust punk, fashion punk, drunk punk, poser- all of these, to me, seem to turn the concept completely backwards.

I was going to try and make this an entire essay, but there's really only one point that circles through my head over and over again when pondering this subject.

The idea of punk is to be an individual. To not let the majority influence your opinions and ideals. Raging against the corporations, the Starbucks and the Verizon Wireless.

Don't let the radio impact your taste in music. Don't let the television tell you what to buy. Don't let popular opinion affect your own opinion.

However, in that vein, isn't actively not listening to a band because they're on the radio thus letting the radio impact your taste in music? If you specifically do not buy a product because MTV said it was cool, isn't that letting the TV tell you what to buy? If you disagree with something because everyone else agrees, isn't that letting popular opinion affect your own opinion?

It seems as if going out of your way to form to these rules - I won't listen to so-and-so because they sold out, I won't shop at Hot Topic because they're owned by the Gap - is utterly hypocritical. These people refusing to wear Nike shoes or drink Mountain Dew are absolutely ridiculous. It is just as bad as fitting to any sort of stereotype.

It's when you start to spend your time stepping carefully, avoiding certain things because of an image you are meant to fit. Hating music because you're supposed to hate it. Fitting to the majority by trying to fit to the minority. It's then when you've failed.

Listen to what you want. Shop where you want. Say what you want. Vote for who you want. Draw what you want, sing what you want, watch what you want. Who cares what the culture wants you to do? Transcend the barriers. Break stereotypes. Listen to every genre of music that pleases you. Just because you listen to Rancid doesn't mean you can't listen to Kelly Clarkson.

Let your mind tell you what you like, not your culture.

here I am, here I am, here I am [20 Jan 2006|11:14pm]
Briefly,
Yellowcard was great. Not much to say, but really, it was fun as hell. Much better than the last time I saw them.

Tonight I saw the play "The People's Temple", about the Jim Jones cult and the 'suicides', and damn. It was insanely powerful and ugh. It was all real, true accounts from survivors and familes. Every line was words spoken by these people that watched it happen. It was just really insane and it made my skin crawl. There's so much I want to say about it but I don't know how many people are actually aware of what happened.

I finished Season 1 of House. :( I'm trying to pick a favorite episode.

Reasons keep pouring in for why I will not rock de ganga, b. All around me the world is enveloped in a haze of smoke, or something.

Something is really not enjoying its stay in my stomach. I'm going to eat a Tums and snuggle into my warm bed.

iudfhgid I love the weekend.
